The 'Publications' section of our website provides information on catalogues and books published by the Banco de España Collection
Since 1988, 23 April has been celebrated as World Book Day, a commemorative event promoted by UNESCO to encourage and celebrate reading. The date was not chosen by chance. It approximately coincides with the deaths in 1616 of three key writers in the history of universal literature: Miguel de Cervantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and William Shakespeare. It is also St George's Day, a feast day which has long been celebrated in Catalonia, where it is traditionally marked by giving gifts of roses and books. This event was officially recognised in 1930, though records show that it dates back to the 15th century. In or around the same date, Spain holds the award ceremony for the Miguel de Cervantes Prize in recognition of the overall output of a writer in the Spanish language.
To mark the date, readers are invited to check out the Publications section of our website, which contains information on all the catalogues and books published by the Banco de España Collection since the portal was set up, plus a few earlier publications which have been uploaded because of their links to programmed exhibitions or their value in highlighting the value and diversity of our collection. All of these publications, including the older ones, are available to download free of charge in PDF format.

As further reading material, the bank has added two more books published prior to the launch of the portal: Historical Drawings of Banco de España Buildings. The Publications section of the website also has specific entries for each of the three volumes of the Catalogue Raisonné. Banco de España Collection, which was published in October 2020, coinciding with the public presentation of the portal itself. Volume One focuses on the classical part of the bank's collection, covering artworks that date from the 15th century to the first half of the 20th. Volumes Two and Three cover the contemporary part, which makes up around 80% of the total collection. Between them these three volumes give details of over 1400 works by almost 500 artists.

The Catalogue Raisonné was designed to be an update of the catalogue of the paintings collection, published by the Banco de España in 1985, extended to include sculptures, sketches and photographs. Both the original catalogue and the extended version produced three years later to mark a meeting in Madrid of the governors of central banks from Latin America and Spain are covered by specific entries in the Publications section of the website. Finally, the section also includes the book La vidriera del Patio de Operaciones del Banco de España ['The Stained-Glass Window of the Trading Floor at the Banco de España'], a detailed study of the symbolist and art-deco-style stained glass produced for this iconic area of the headquarters building on Plaza Cibeles by Mayer of Munich and Maumejean. Both were among the leading stained-glass makers of their day, and their design for the bank's building included features that were highly novel in their field.
