2328 REALES DE VELLÓN. Goya y los orígenes de la Colección Banco de España

Authors

Catalogue of the exhibition 2328 reales de vellón. Goya and the origins of the Coleccíon Banco de España. The catalogue explores the early years of the collection between the foundation of the Banco de San Carlos in 1782 and 1856, the year in which the institution took its present name, following the merger of the Banco de San Fernando and the Banco de Isabel II. It also examines the way in which its origins conditioned the way the collection subsequently evolved.

The book begins with an introductory text by Pablo Hernández de Cos, Governor of the Banco de España, and a detailed introduction to the exhibition by Yolanda Romero, Curator of the Banco de España Collection. These are followed by essays by Manuela B. Mena Marqués and Carlos G. Navarro. The former explores the art collection of the Banco de San Carlos, while the second looks at the work held by the Banco de San Fernando, the Banco de Isabel II and the fledgling Banco de España. The catalogue also contains articles by Pablo Martín Aceña, María de Inclán Sánchez / Elena Serrano García and Joaquín Selgas on the Bank's archives and documents and an essay by Ismael Amaro Martos on trends in fashion as reflected in some of the paintings displayed in the exhibition. There is also detailed information in text and pictures on the works on show, with biographical sketches of the artists and the subjects of the portraits. All texts are available in Spanish and English.
