COLECCIÓN DE PINTURA DEL BANCO DE ESPAÑA

Authors

Alfonso Pérez Sánchez, Julián Gállego, María José Alonso and José María Viñuela (editor).

On the occasion of the meeting of the Governors of Latin American and Spanish Central Banks in Madrid in 1988, an expanded edition of the 1985 Banco de España's Catalogue of Paintings was published, to include the 57 paintings that had since been acquired by the bank. The 322 paintings are divided into three historical periods: 16th to 18th centuries; 19th century and 20th century. Each section includes introductions to the genres or groups of pictures, with illustrations of a selection of some of the most significant pieces. Each of these sections includes an alphabetical list of artists from the period, with biographical notes. An appendix at the back of the book gives a general bibliography of literature used in the study of the works, a list of plates and an index of names featured in the text.

The catalogue was edited by José María Viñuela,  Curator of the Banco de España from 1982 to 2015, and there is a foreword by Mariano Rubio, Governor of the bank between 1984 and 1992. The introductory essay and catalogue of paintings from the 16th to the 18th centuries is by Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez (director of the Museo del PradoAbre en nueva ventana between 1983 and 1991). The introduction to the section on 19th and 20th centuries paintings is by Julián Gállego (Professor of History of Art), and the works were catalogued with the collaboration of María José Alonso (Professor of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage).
