Alfonso Pérez Sánchez, with a PhD from the Complutense University of Madrid, was one of the great Spanish art historians and specialised in Baroque painting. He was a professor of Modern and Contemporary History of Art at the Autonomous University of Madrid and was the Deputy Director and in charge of depositories at the Prado until he took on the role of director from 1983 to 1991. He made a decisive contribution to its modernisation and renovation. He was a member of the Hispanic Society of America in New York, as well as the Real Academia de la Historia, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome. He wrote numerous monographs, including Pasado, presente y futuro del Museo del Prado (1977) and De pintura y pintores (1993). He was a contributor to the catalogue of the Colección de pintura del Banco de España, published in 1985.
