BANCO DE ESPAÑA. COLECCIÓN DE PINTURA
This volume covers all the paintings collected between the foundation of the Banco de San Carlos (the earliest predecessor of the Banco de España) in 1782 and 1985. In all, 260 works are catalogued, divided into three historical periods: 16th–18th centuries; 19th century; and 20th century. There are introductory texts on the different genres or groups of paintings, with colour plates of some of the most important items. Each of the three sections includes an alphabetical list of artists from the period, with biographical notes. An appendix at the back of the book gives a general bibliography of literature used in the study of the works, a list of plates and an index of names featured in the text.
The catalogue was edited by José María Viñuela, Curator of the Banco de España from 1982 to 2015. The paintings dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries were catalogued by Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez (Director of the Museo del Prado
from 1983 to 1991) who also wrote the introductory essay to this section. Julián Gállego (Professor of Art History) wrote the introductory essay to the section on 19th and 20th century paintings and carried out the corresponding cataloguing work in conjunction with María José Alonso (Professor of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage).
