The books on the table hark back timidly to the conventions for portraits of personages linked to the Bank, as allusions to administrative responsibilities, but in this case (as in several other portraits of governors) official references predominate. Those references here are found in the pose adopted by the sitter, which is far from relaxed. He stands stiffly, looking in a direction that does not meet the eyes of viewers.

Antonio García Alix (Murcia 1852 - Madrid 1911)
Governor of the Banco de España 1902 - 1903
Governor of the Banco de España 1908 - 1909

Antonio García Alix graduated in Law and then joined the Judicial Corps of the armed forces. He went into politics in 1886 as the member of parliament for Yecla (Murcia). He subsequently served as the representative for Cartagena uninterruptedly until his death. With his solid grounding in legal and economic matters, he joined the Conservative Party in 1895 and was appointed Under-Secretary for Grace and Justice, answerable to Francisco Romero Robledo as Minister. In 1899 he worked with Raimundo Fernández Villaverde on his reform plan, in regard to settling the debts left by the wars in the colonies and with the USA. This gave him an exhaustive knowledge of financial issues. In 1900 he became Minister for Public Instruction and Fine Arts in the government headed by Francisco Silvela and in December 1902 he was appointed as Governor of the Banco de España, though he left the post in July 1903 to become Minister of Governance. In January 1905 he was made Finance Minister in the government led by Raimundo Fernández Villaverde, and focused his programme on a budget for reconstruction. He was reappointed as Governor of the Banco de España in 1908.

He was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the Academy of Moral and Political Science.
