DE GOYA À NOS JOURS

This exhibition tells the story of a bank that elected, more than two hundred years ago, to invest in art. It offers an overview of the Banco de España's collections and is a testimony to its important role as a patron of the arts since its foundation in 1782. With over seventy pieces by forty-eight different artists, this is the largest exhibition of Spanish art ever staged in Morocco.

De Goya à nos Jours follows a chronological itinerary. The first section explores the origins of the collection with an extraordinary selection of portraits by master painters of the period. They include work by Francisco de Goya, Salvador Maella, Vicente López, Federico de Madrazo, Joaquín Sorolla and Ignacio Zuloaga,, and the subjects include some of the monarchs who lent their support to the creation and development of the bank, as well as its early governors and other illustrious figures who lent their backing to the institution.

Following these works from the institutional portrait gallerryAbre en nueva ventana, one of the jewels of the collection, the exhibition continues with a selection of pieces from its contemporary collection. This section looks at some of the key chapters in Spanish art history, from the post civil-war period to the present day, and highlights the importance of Goya in the genealogy of modern Spanish art. The final section in the exhibition is given over to some of the most recent additions to the Banco de España Collection, which in recent decades has begun acquiring an increasing number of works by artists from outside Spain.
