One of the most important values of Perejaume’s work is what Alexandre Cirici called the ‘Nova Renaixença’ [New Renaissance] implicit in the semantic value of his paintings. Catalonia and Catalan are an important part of his artistic endeavour. Catalonia’s past, its expansive commercial action in the Mediterranean as an embracer of cultures, and its potential for cultural expansion in the future, are combined in this poeticized view of an instrument of the past in the form of a sailing boat, which acts as a metaphorical sign of the present as well. This imaginary language is expressed in the square space of the work, which is entered through a nearly circular view that leads us to the repetitive leitmotiv in opposite colours: the black and white of the age-old sailing boats, which seem to float on the white reflection of the moon on the sea and the magical dark blues of the Mediterranean. The spatial and chromatic play thus leads to a kaleidoscopic view of the world of the past dominated by the vessel, where the land, the water and the vastness of the sky merge into a single cosmic circle.
