Threshold (2000) comprises a glass pane sealed onto a metal frame that covers a black-painted wooden board. It is roughly the size of a door, and is shown resting on the floor against a wall. It suggests a blocked-off threshold, shown to viewers as a deep, dark space that also reflects their own image back at them as if they were spectres 'on the other side'. In this and other similar works, the artist maintains a strong feeling of presence, but plays with the illusion caused by a glass surface set against a black background, offering nothing at the same time as an apparently empty space.
Lledó hints at the poetry of space and, in a broader sense, at a meditation on forms and on space itself in what we might call ‘the visible’. A thinking geography on the limits of representative art.
