The painting was inexplicably attributed to Bassano when it was acquired. In reality, it is a mediocre copy of a composition by Simon Vouet that the Parisian painter produced for the church of Chilly-Mazarin, which ceased to exist in 1945. It was well-known for an engraving by Daret dated 1639. The popularity of the print is apparent from the fact that several copies of this work, of different levels of quality but based on the engraving, are kept in Spain. In his PhD dissertation on French painting of the 17th and 18th centuries in Spain, Juan J. Luna refers to others in private collections in Madrid and in Jaén cathedral in addition to the version held by the Banco de España.
