Painted in the Dutch style with repeated motifs characteristic of traditional landscapes, this is a work of moderate quality whose authorship is difficult to pin down.

Certain aspects of its technique —especially the treatment of the brightly lit foreground and the cloudscape— suggest a late-period work, perhaps from the 18^th century, that seeks to imitate the technique and motifs of the 17^th century out of loyalty to conventional fashions. The subject of carts at a ford is a constant in Nordic landscape painting; the way in which the trees are depicted and the light are reminiscent of Meindert Hobbema (1638- 1709) whom the author seems deliberately to be imitating.
