In the works of Guillermo Lledó order and silence serve as a nexus between a style of painting that shies away from the pictorial and a style of sculpture that transcends the idea of volume in space. The set of works known as Vertical Gesture, which date from 1986 and 1987, feature an approach which differs from the rest of his output. They represent a shift in his pictorial creations towards a more expressive terrain, based on gesture, which he then gradually abandoned to return to a colder aesthetic and a more rational style. The paint is mixed directly on the backing, with rapid brush-strokes around a darker, vertical patch of colour in the centre of the paper. The resulting image looks as if it has been created spontaneously around an axis striving to stand vertical, and as such suggests a symbol of life and natural growth.
