Gregorio del Olmo was a member of the Madrid School and the later version of the Vallecas School. He remained true to the poetic tenets of his generation throughout his life, as evidenced by this work, painted in 1975 towards the end of his career. A pack of Spanish playing cards is shown on a side table. On the table-cloth are a coffee set with liqueurs and a cigar box. These were all common items in cubist paintings, and heirs to the long tradition of still-life painting in Spain and northern Europe. The forms are sketched in smooth glazes, which are also used to outline their silhouettes. The range of colours is fairly simple, with the particular shades of yellow typical of del Olmo's work predominating. His interest in imbuing everyday objects with an evanescent sensuality is clear.
