The pagoda-topped hood of this longcase clock has ball-shaped finials at the corners in gilded metal. There are two columns with fluted shafts and Doric capitals on the sides of the gazed door protecting the clock dial.
The dial is in gilded metal. The silvered metal chapter ring shows the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes, in intervals of five, in Arabic numerals. Above the main dial, there is another subsidiary dial for the strike mute control. Below the XII, there is an aperture showing the clockmaker's signature: 'John Wirans // London'. The rest of the dial has pierced gilded metal plates. The hands are in silvered metal.
The trunk is straight-sided and the base is rectangular. A door at the front of the trunk, is simply decorated with a moulding.
As demand for these items increased towards the end of the nineteenth century, imitations and copies of eighteenth century clocks were made.
