- Observations: Sketch for the work numbered Cat. P_338. The the printed letterhead of the Modern Art Museum appears on the back. There are a seagull and a clenched fist drawn in pencil.
This drawing is a sketch of an idea for the canvas that is displayed in a niche of the lobby of the branch of the Banco de España in Barcelona, commissioned from Daniel Vázquez Díaz during the construction of the building.
Drawn first in pencil, the composition was finished with nimble strokes of watercolour and planes of cold colours, where green dominates. Notes in pencil scattered over the composition – ‘blue, silver, grey, yellow, green, white, sand, greenish ochres’ – act as a reminder of the colour composition programme.
The spontaneity of the strokes and the elemental nature of the patches of colour give this sketch an air of freshness. The mastery of the artist can be appreciated from this earliest stage of a subject using limited means. The essence of the composition of the large oil-painting for which this watercolour was a sketch is already defined here, with the central volume of the boat, the figures and the two stretches of beach, the upper one with boats on the horizon, produced using two brush strokes as proof of the artist’s capacity for synthesis. It was purchased on the Madrid art market in 1983.
