The Eclipse of Rita Hayworth (1987) forms part of Luis Gordillo's small pleiad of references to the world of cinema (his previous series, based on a Peter Sellers photograph, begun in 1978 and the image of Tom Jones in some of his other works are well known). The invocation of the star system is merely an excuse, a pop anecdote over which the most clearly surrealising influences prevail: The large limp limb that forms the central feature of the painting is inevitably reminiscent of Dalí's melted forms from the 1930s (given the parallels in the titles, one might cite Dalí's Enigma of Hitler (1939, Museo Reina Sofía)) or the biomorphism displayed during certain periods by Joan Miró, and more generally the most organic and ethereal forms of surrealism — undoubtedly one of the influences (albeit remote) on Gordillo's work.
