In this work, dating from 1990, María Luisa Rojo explores an ambiguous landscape, which she resolves with the effectiveness of its own lack of definition and with recurrent recourse to a subtle web of candles to create a map with a liquid appearance, where sulphur-coloured chimneys wrapped in iridescent mist can almost be perceived. The misty sensation given by this work contrasts sharply with other, more energetic compositions such as the series of domes in which she reinterprets the image of an astronomical observatory in Guadalajara and her painting based on structural aspects of architect Rafael Moneo's design for Atocha railway station.

Madrid 1960

María Luisa Rojo graduated in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, and subsequently obtained a grant to continue her studies at the Pratt Institute in New York, where she lived from 1985 to 1987. She later received a further grant to spend an academic year in Rome. She has exhibited at the Sa Pleta Freda Gallery in Son Servera (Palma) and at the Gamarra y Garrigues and May Moré galleries in Madrid. For many years she has focused on painting in a style which is figurative but not highly representative, which shows a cosmic abstract intentionality with geometrical signs. She has also ventured into the fields of books and art objects. She currently teaches and is Head of Programmes at the Liceo Europeo school.
