In addition to completing a PhD in History of Art from the Complutense University of Madrid, Pilar Silva Maroto’s career has always been linked to the Art Department of the Faculty of Geography and History at that university, first with a research training scholarship and later as a lecturer. In 1997, when she was a senior lecturer in the Department of Art II at the University, she took over as seconded Head of the Department of Conservation of Spanish and Flemish, Mediaeval and Early Renaissance Painting at the Museo del Prado, where she later became Head of the Department of Flemish Painting and Northern Schools (1400 to 1600) and Spanish Painting (1100 to 1500) until 2017. At the Prado, she oversaw the preparation of the halls for Flemish painting (1998) and the restoration of Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights and curated the El jardín de las delicias: copias, estudio técnico y restauración (2000) exhibition, as well as Masterpieces from the Prado Museum (National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, 2002).
