THE TYRANNY OF CHRONOS. Catalogue

Authors

Yolanda Romero, Justo Navarro, Amelia Aranda Huete and David Garneau

Catalogue of The Tyranny of Chronos exhibition (27 November 2024 – 29 March 2025).

How has the modern concept of linear time evolved? How does it relate to the control of productivity? In what way do non-western cultural contexts and the world of art challenge this approach? These are just some of the themes explored in this exhibition, which contains over fifty exhibits, including tapestries, paintings, sculptures, photographs and clocks. Most are from the Banco de España's own collection, but some have been especially loaned for the event by other Spanish and foreign institutions

The exhibition was the venue for the official unveiling of Annie Leibovitz's portraits of the King and Queen of Spain and the outgoing governor, Pablo Hernández de Cos. The two new works are the first photographs in the bank's portrait gallery.

This catalogue has been published in parallel with the exhibition. As well as providing detailed information on all the pieces on display and biographic sketches of the artists, it also includes a series of essays exploring in greater depth the issues and problems addressed in the show.

N.B. Please note that the downloadable PDF version of the catalogue (see left-hand column) may not fulfil some WCAG 2.0 guidelines on accessibility. However, most of the content is available, in an accessible format that meets 'Double A' criteria, from the Collection section of the website.
