The Banco de España Collection holds two photos by Wolfgang Tillmans: a still-life and a monochrome shot. He began to take such pictures early on in his career, but it was not until much later that he showed them in public. In his early days he focused on the provocative pictures of night-life that made his name.
6407-19 is part of a series of abstract images called Silver that he began to show in 2000. As indicated, it is a large-format, monochrome photo with a minimalist appearance. The whole image is flooded with green, though a closer look reveals some marks. These are images that turned out randomly when Tillmans put emulsion paper through a colour processor using the procedures for developing analogue photos: light, liquids, silver salts, etc. With the advent of digital photography this alchemy has been lost.
