Hidalgo was a portrait and figure painter trained at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid and in Rome thanks to a stipend from Jaén Provincial Council. On his return, he entered his works in National Fine Arts exhibitions, where he won Third Place Medals in 1890 and in 1897 for portraits, a Second Place Medal in 1904 and another in 1908 for the painting The Three Ages of Life. He was the Deputy Director of the Museum of Modern Art. He was the father of architect Rafael and painter Hipólito Hidalgo de Caviedes. The latter was one of the most important figures of the Spanish avant-garde in the years leading up to the Spanish Civil War and produced a splendid portrait of his father.
