Maximo Peña Muñoz lived in Argentina when he was young. There, he worked with the painter Blanco Aguirre. He was awarded a grant by his local government to study painting in Madrid, where he studied under Casto Plasencia. He also received a stipend in 1885 to study in Rome, where he lived for three years. He produced portraits in pastels and worked as an illustrator. He exhibited a portrait of Princess Paz, the sister of King Alfonso XIII, at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. He later became a member of its Board of Governors. He was involved in the decoration of the San Francisco el Grande Basilica in Madrid. He exhibited at the Iturrioz Salon in Madrid in 1915 and at the Cano Salon, also held in the Spanish capital, in 1940. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Charles III.
