His parents were from Andalusia. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Cadiz and later moved to Barcelona in 1912 and then to Madrid in 1920. He took part in numerous domestic and international exhibitions. In 1923 he founded the Academia Libre ['Free Academy'] in Madrid, where he taught for some years. He was a full professor at the School of San Fernando, and became its head in 1947. He staged numerous solo exhibitions in Spain and Latin America.
