Jesús Olasagasti studied painting under Ascensio Martiarena and Julián de Tellaeche in his home town before moving to Madrid to become a pupil of Daniel Vázquez Díaz. He specialised in portraits and enjoyed considerable success among leading personalities of his time, especially for his portraits of women, in which he was renowned for his delicate brush-work. He won prizes at the Certamen de Noveles Guipuzcoanos ['Contest for New Artists from Gipuzkoa'] in San Sebastián in 1923 and 1925. He was also the editor of the Arte y Hogar magazine.
