Eugenio Hermoso Martínez was one of the leading lights of Extremaduran painting of his time, along with Adelardo Covarsi. He studied at the Seville Fine Arts School with Jiménez Aranda, who greatly influenced him, and at the San Fernando School in Madrid. He entered national exhibitions, where he obtained a Third Place Medal in 1904, a Second in 1906 and 1908 and a First in 1917 for At the Village Fiesta, a Costumbrist piece.  He took part in international exhibitions, where his works on rural themes won numerous prizes. He taught at the Huelva Provincial School of Painting and moved to Madrid in 1919, where he lectured at the San Fernando Fine Arts School. In 1941 he was made a member of the Fine Arts Academy in Madrid. He published his autobiography under the nom-de-plume of Francisco Teodoro de Nertóbriga in 1955.
